Holiday Hazards For Kitties
December 1, 2022
Happy Holidays! This can be a fun time for our feline patients. Fluffy loves getting special gifts and treats just as much as the rest of us do. Of course, kitties also run at top mischief settings at this time of year. That can be dangerous! A Saginaw, MI vet lists some common hazards to be aware of below.

Décor

Fluffy just can’t resist batting at small objects. Anything small or sharp is a hazard. That includes things like ornament hooks, manger pieces, figurines, tinsel strands, and breakable ornaments.

Food

Although cats are generally pickier than dogs, some kitties will eat just about anything. Don’t give Fluffy anything that isn’t safe! That list includes chocolate, meat on the bone, raw dough, grapes and raisins, alcohol, and anything high in salt, sugar, or fat. Ask your vet for more information.

Shenanigans

We know, it’s always funny watching videos of cats wreaking havoc on Christmas trees. However, these shenanigans can be quite dangerous. Keep Fluffy in mind as you decorate. Put just a few things on the bottom part of the tree. Everything else—including any breakable ornaments and the majority of the lights and tinsel—should go on the top.

Guests

We mention guests not because they should ever pose a threat, but because of the possibility of mishaps. Fluffy could get her tail caught under a chair or slip out a door as someone is coming or going. Keep an eye on the furball!

Plants

Holly, ivy, poinsettias, and mistletoe are all toxic to cats. Take care with any live plants you bring home. (Tip: check the ASPCA website here for a list of safe and unsafe options.) The tree itself can be dangerous; needles are very sharp, and can cause intestinal problems. The water may also be unsafe, as it could contain chemical traces.

Fires

Take care with fires and candles. You don’t want your furry buddy getting singed! Put grates before fires, and keep candles out of paws’ reach.

Stress

Holidays can be stressful for both people and pets. Pay some extra attention to Fluffy! Take time out of the holiday bustle to just relax with your feline pal. A purring furball, some yummy snacks or beverages, and a great seasonal book or movie can all make for a purrfect holiday night.
