Did you know that cats are considered seniors by age 11? Kitties are living longer than ever these days. Many of our feline pals will make it to their late teens or even their twenties. Of course, an 11-year old furball may still think of herself as a kitten. However, you’ll want to start making some gradual changes to your fuzzy retiree’s care regimen. Here, a Saginaw, MI veterinarian offers some advice on caring for Fluffy in her golden years.

Kitty Comforts

Small touches can really go a long way towards keeping your furry friend comfortable. Things like pet ramps, nightlights, senior-friendly litterboxes, and regular grooming sessions can all make life a little easier for Fluffy.

Keep Fluffy Active

Senior cats are master nappers. Fluffy can spend up to 20 hours a day snoozing! Make sure your drowsy pet has plenty of soft beds!

Veterinary Care

Fluffy may need to come in a bit more frequently as she gets older. Keep up with your feline buddy’s exams and screenings! At home, watch for potential signs of sickness. Some of these include reduced appetite, changes in behavior, poor coat condition, crankiness, fever, lethargy, stiffness, withdrawal, vomiting, respiratory issues, and litterbox trouble. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Weight Control

Fluffy will never outgrow her two favorite hobbies: sleeping and eating. As your cat slows down, she’ll become less active, which will make it easy for her to gain weight. Don’t let your furball turn into a butterball! Extra pounds are very bad for your kitty’s health. Keep your feline friend active with toys and playtime, and don’t let her convince you to overfeed her.

Stay Home

The Great Outdoors is dangerous for any kitty, but it’s especially hazardous for older ones. Fluffy won’t be as fast or agile as she once was, and she may not be able to escape or defend herself from stray animals or other hazards. She could also get confused about her whereabouts, and not be able to find her way home. Keep your cat inside!

Purrs
