Breed Spotlight: The Golden Retriever
February 1, 2024

The month of February is filled with a lot of fun pet holidays, including Doggy Date Night and Love Your Pet Day. We also have a special day for the Golden Retriever, which is February 3rd. These amazing pups definitely deserve some extra love and attention. A local Saginaw, MI vet puts the breed in the spotlight below.

What Is The Typical Golden Retriever’s Temperament?

Fido has a wonderful temperament. It’s not hard to see why this Very Good Boy is one of America’s most popular dogs. They’re loyal, loving, affectionate, and great with kids. Their cheerful demeanor is actually noted in the breed standard. According to early records, their tails often moved in a “merry fashion.” That certainly hasn’t changed! These guys tend to be super fun and friendly.

Golden Retriever: A Very Good Boy

There are three types of Golden Retrievers: British, American, and Canadian, though there are only minor differences between them. Fido is a fairly large dog: boys typically weigh about 75 pounds and grow to about 24 inches tall, while females typically weigh about 65 pounds and grow to about 23 inches tall. On average, the Golden usually lives about 10 to 12 years, but will always be a puppy at heart.

These amiable and smart dogs are ideal companions for families. They thrive in various dog-related tasks and generally have a cheerful and endearing personality. They are very patient with children, and they do well with cats and other dogs. They are eager to please, so they are usually easy to train. Due to their need for exercise, they prefer homes with yards. (Fido likes pools as well.)

Golden Retrievers: How Active Are They?

Golden Retrievers, like many sporting breeds, are very energetic. In fact, they are known for their high energy levels. You’ll need to make sure that Fido is getting plenty of exercise and playtime. Failure to do so may lead to obesity – a problem made worse by the Golden’s fondness for snacks. You’ll need to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best workout routine for your furry friend. Because Fido is prone to hip dysplasia, you may need to avoid activities that put too much strain on his joints. Your Saginaw, MI vet may also recommend that you not encourage him to jump or stand excessively.

Of course, your pet’s workouts will change over time. As he ages, your canine companion may become a couch potato.

Do Golden Retrievers Make Good Family Dogs?

It is a great choice to have a Golden Retriever as a family pet. However, Goldens may be a poor choice for renters, due to their size. Although they are classified as medium-sized, Goldens may exceed the restrictions set by many landlords.

Why Is Golden Retriever Day February 3rd?

The date was chosen by Kristen Shroyer at iheartgoldenRetrievers, in honor of her beloved pooch, Quincey. This event is catching on. Golden, Colorado hosted a gathering of Goldens to celebrate this pawesome occasion. As you can expect, it was adorable: in fact, it might be the cutest thing that has happened this year so far.

What Is Golden Retriever History?

The origins of the Golden Retriever are well-documented. The breed was developed by Sir Dudley Majoribanks. His meticulous record-keeping provided us with extensive knowledge of its history. Majoribanks crossed a Flat-coated Retriever named Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. This initial pairing laid the foundation for further crossbreeding efforts, with Red Setters, Labrador Retrievers, and Bloodhounds also going into the mix.

What Health Problems Are Associated With Golden Retrievers?

Goldens are generally quite healthy, but they can be prone to certain issues, such as allergies, skin problems, and eye problems. One common issue is cancer. Joint problems are also prevalent among them. In fact, around 20% of Goldens develop joint problems like hip and elbow dysplasia. Another serious condition they may face is subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS), which can be fatal.

Additionally, these dogs are susceptible to ear infections. This is due to the shape of their floppy ears, which provides a moist environment for bacteria to grow. Regular ear cleanings are a must.

Fido may benefit from a pet health insurance policy. We also recommend that you keep up with the tests recommended by the National Breed Club. Among these are hip and elbow evaluations, eye and cardiac examinations, and tests for Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis 5 (Golden Retriever) (NCL, NCL5).  For more information, contact your Saginaw, MI veterinarian.

What Do Golden Retrievers Love Most?

Goldens are those happy, cheerful dogs that love life and want to be everyone’s best friend. What are Fido’s favorite things? We have a pretty good idea.

Go ahead and indulge your pup’s lust for life and treat him to some of his favorite things. Just don’t overdo it with fatty treats.

What Kind Of Coat Do Golden Retrievers Have ?

If there is one downside to Golden Retrievers, it is that they shed a lot. Fido will try to share his gorgeous coat with you, and he will dutifully leave fur all over the place. You’ll have to brush him regularly. As far as grooming needs go, there is a bright side here: you won’t have to bathe your pet too often. You will need to keep up with dental care and nail trims.

What Are The Differences Between The Yellow Labrador Retriever And The Golden Retriever?

Fido bears a remarkable resemblence to his buddy, the Yellow Lab. They share a similar size, appearance, and temperament, which can often lead to confusion between the two. However, one noticeable difference lies in their coats – Goldens have longer fur. Their ears and noses are also slightly longer than the Lab’s. Both breeds excel in multiple fields but tend to pursue different careers: Goldens commonly serve as therapy or service dogs, while Labs have a strong presence in search-and-rescue and police work.

What Are Golden Retrievers Skilled In?

With their intelligence and obedience, Goldens are top performers in a variety of canine sports and activities, such as obedience, agility, and tracking. They’re also skilled hunters, with a natural affinity for swimming and playing Fetch.

Some may say they have a knack for the political game as well. One Golden, Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II, was elected mayor of Idyllwild–Pine Cove, California. Max appointed his cousins, Mitzi and Mikey, as deputy mayors, before passing on the title to another cousin, Max III. Don’t worry: the town hasn’t completely gone to the dogs. This unique event served as a fundraiser for the town which does not have an official government. Locals decided to elect a pet as their leader. Eventually, they ended up with 14 dogs and two cats on the ballot.

Of course, no one is good at everything. The Golden is not particularly good at being a watchdog. They’re just too friendly! Have we mentioned how cute they are?

In Conclusion: The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the world. They are friendly, obedient, and playful, and make excellent family dogs.
