Taking In A Stray
November 1, 2023

Are you considering adopting a stray cat? Perhaps Fluffy showed up on your porch, cold and hungry. Or, maybe a friend or family member is trying to help a cute street kitty find a home. Strays can make wonderful pets. However, it’s a big transition for them. A Saginaw, MI vet offers some advice on helping a stray get settled in this article.

Socialization

Some cats will immediately hop into your lap for cuddles, some will warm up slowly, and some will always be a bit aloof. Fluffy’s history plays a big role here. Many strays are former pets that were lost or abandoned. These have been around people before. They may still be shy, however, especially if they’ve had bad experiences with people. Age also factors in. If you have a kitten, you likely won’t have too much trouble winning Fluffy over. With older cats, it just depends. The main thing? Don’t force it. Your cat’s trust has to be earned, which may take time.

Make A Veterinary Appointment

One of the first things you’ll need to do is make an appointment. Fluffy will most likely need to be treated for parasites. A full exam is also in order, as are microchipping and, for intact kitties, spay or neuter surgery.

Getting Started

At first, you may want to keep your feline friend in a separate area, such as a spare room or utility room. If Fluffy will be an only pet, you can let her explore as she wants. If you have other pets, keep them separated until your new arrival has gotten all the requisite shots and preventative products and your vet has given the all-clear.

Playtime

It’s important to make your new cat feel safe and secure in your house. You may find that offering an enclosed space, such as a kitty condo or even a box, will help her feel safe. Taking time to play with Fluffy can also be beneficial. This can not only help keep your cat fit and active, it will also help her burn off any nervous energy. Plus, it’s really good for bonding.

Patience

It may take quite some time for your feline friend to adjust to being a pet again. The longer your pet spent on her own, the more time it will take for her to adjust. Be patient. Love takes time!
