Are you planning on going camping this summer? It’s hard to beat spending time under the stars before a crackling fire with your furry best friend and some human loved ones. A Saginaw, MI vet offers some advice on camping with your canine buddy in this article.

Preparing

Make sure that your canine companion is current on his vaccines and parasite control. You may also want to consider getting your pup vaccinated for leptospirosis. Ask your vet for advice. Fido should be both microchipped and wearing ID tags. GPS collars and smart tags are great high-tech options for identification. Just do some research before buying one, as these products do vary on things like range, water resistance, subscriptions and fees, and battery life.

Training

Fido doesn’t have to know dozens of commands, but he should know basic doggy obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Come. This is important, as it can stop your pooch from tearing off after a squirrel. 

Packing

Fido will need a doggy bag of his own. Pack food, durable toys, treats, water and water dishes, a towel, a spare leash and tie line, and a pet first-aid kit. If you’ll be boating and/or spending time near water, bring a doggy lifejacket along as well.

Water

This may be easier said than done, but don’t let Fido slurp water from puddles, lakes, or ponds. If you aren’t bringing water, boil or treat your furry pal’s water, just as you would your own. You’ll also need to be aware of the possibility of blue-green algae blooms, particularly in warm, shallow lakes.

Leashes

Retractable leashes can be great, but they aren’t safe to use in every situation. There’s a chance that the mechanism could jam. Fido could also get wrapped up in something. If you’re near steep drops, rushing rivers, or other potential hazards, use a regular leash.

Campsite Dangers

Campsites can be quite dangerous for our canine pals. Fires and hot coals are both concerns. Keep your pooch away from the firepit! Fido may also get a bright idea about going through trash in search of leftovers. Given that garbage may contain things like bones, skewers, tin foil, fat trimmings, can lids, and unsafe food, that is definitely not something you want Fido getting into.
