Keeping Fido Fit
April 1, 2023

April is Active Dog Month. It’s also Canine Fitness Month. There’s a great reason for this common theme: April is a great time to get back outdoors with Fido, and soak up some fresh air and sunshine. Staying active is just as important for dogs as it is for us! A local Saginaw, MI vet offers some advice on doggy fitness below.

Try New Things

Daily walks are pretty much the gold standard for doggy exercises, and are suitable for all pups. Aside from that, you’ll want to figure out what Fido likes and dislikes. Our canine pals all have their own personalities, and tastes. That applies to things like food, treats, toys, beds, and even workouts. Some pups, such as Greyhounds, absolutely love to run. Others prefer games like Fetch or Tag.

Play It Safe

Always put your pet’s safety first. Choosing the right type of exercise is of course crucial, but you’ll also need to take care not to overexert Fido. Keep an eye out for signs of doggy fatigue, such as panting and lagging behind. If your furry friend seems tired, give him a water break, then head for home.

Choose The Right Activities

It’s important to stick with activities that are appropriate for your canine buddy. Some pooches should not be encouraged to run or swim. Others should not jump or stand on their hind legs. If you aren’t sure what is and isn’t right for FIdo, ask your vet for specific advice.

Make It Routine

Try to keep Fido’s exercise regimen fairly routine. This is important for a few reasons. For one thing, dogs tend to do best when on a steady schedule. It will also help your furry bff build and maintain his endurance better.

Choose The Right Gear

Fido should have a comfortable harness or collar and a good, sturdy leash. There are things to keep in mind here. For instance, retractable leashes are fine in some situations, but can be dangerous in others. They can also become very unsafe if the mechanism jams. As far as harnesses go, you may find that one with a front clip is better at stopping your pet from pulling. No matter what you choose, make sure that your furry pal is wearing proper ID tags.
