Resolutions For People With Puppies
January 1, 2023

Happy New Year! If you’re starting 2023 out with a puppy, you’re definitely in for a very cute and busy year. Those first 12 months of little Fido’s life are critical to his growth and development. A Saginaw, MI vet suggests a few things you can add to your list of goals below.

Petproofing

Puppies basically become adorable little chewing machines once their adult teeth start coming in. That usually happens around 3 to 6 months. You’ll need to be extra diligent about providing Fido with proper chew toys. Petproofing is also critical. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous, such as small or sharp items, chemicals, ropes and cords, and toxic plants.  Ask your vet for tips.

Keep Up With Training

Little Fido has a lot to learn this year. The most important commands that your canine buddy should know are Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Start teaching him these right away. Always reward your puppy with treats and praise when he does well. Don’t move on until the current command has been mastered.

Socialize

Socialization will happen in a very short frame of time, but it will affect your furry pal for the rest of his life. If Fido isn’t exposed to new places and faces now, he may become naturally wary about new experiences. Doggy daycare can be great for this. Ask your vet for socialization tips.

Take Lots Of Photos

Your furry buddy’s adorable toddler phase won’t last long. In fact, little Fido will be all grown up before you know it. Capture these cute moments!

Be Patient

Sooner or later, little Fido will misbehave, whether by getting into something, destroying things, or just being naughty. Don’t get upset: some shenanigans should be expected at this stage. Reward good behavior, correct bad behavior, and keep moving forward.

Proper Veterinary Care

In order to get your canine companion started out on the right paw in life, you’ll need to bring him in a few times this year. In addition to getting little Fido his initial vaccines and getting him started on parasite control, microchipping and spay/neuter surgery are on the menu. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
