National Cat Herder’s Day
December 15, 2022
Did you know that today is National Cat Herder’s Day? That may sound a bit silly, but there actually is a real cause behind this ‘pawesome’ awareness event: celebrating anyone who regularly is faced with difficult, seemingly impossible, and/or nonsensical tasks. A Saginaw, MI vet offers some insight on this ‘pawspicious’ occasion below.

Background

Cat Herder’s Day seems to have been started by Wellcat back in the 80’s. Of course, the term didn’t really take root until the year 2000, when a Super Bowl commercial depicting one poor cowboy trying to actually herd cats became popular. The intent was to honor anyone who just has a lot on their plate, as well as folks who feel like they get caught up in silly, meaningless tasks.

TNR Programs

It’s easy to joke about herding cats, and poke fun at how silly the idea is. However, there actually is a serious parallel to this funny topic. Many trap/neuter/release programs help fight overpopulation by catching, fixing, and releasing strays. They use safe traps and cat food to catch the kitties, and then let them go after they’ve healed. If you’re looking for a charity to support this holiday season, that may be a good option.

Herding Fluffy

So how would one go about herding cats? A few decades ago, running a can opener was the standard procedure, but most furballs are used to pop top cans these days. That said, there are a few things you can try. Laser pointers are extremely effective. Boxes are also useful for attracting kitties. They don’t even have to be real ones: many of our feline buddies find an outline of tape on the floor irresistible. Sunbeams also make good cat traps.

Kittens

You may know that mama cats carry their kittens by the scruff of the neck. However, this isn’t a grip you should use on a kitty, except in an emergency. For one thing, it can be very painful for cats. It also makes Fluffy feel that she’s being attacked, which could cause or increase anxiety and fear. Always hold your cat gently. Once you gain your furry pal’s trust, you may very well find that she comes when you call her … at least some of the time.   Happy Holidays from all of us here at Veterinary Health Center, your Saginaw, MI animal clinic.
