5 Reasons To Adopt A Senior Dog
November 1, 2022
Did you know that November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month? While many people understandably go for puppies when choosing their new canine companions, there’s actually a lot to be said for older pooches. In fact, they may be the perfect pets! A Saginaw, MI vet lists some of the benefits of adopting a senior dog in this article.

They’re Calmer

Fido is very playful, which is one reason he’s so much fun. However, it can be hard keeping up with an active young dog. Pets in their golden years don’t have as much zing or zoom as younger animals. You won’t need to take your canine pal on long, vigorous walks, or spend hours playing with him. He also won’t be as prone to destructive habits like digging and chewing.

Shorter Commitment

When you adopt a puppy, you could be signing on for up to 15 years of pet parenting. Older pets don’t have that much time left. That can be a bonus for those who aren’t sure what their lives will be like that far ahead.

Prior Experience

It takes a lot of work to teach a puppy the ins and outs of being a good boy. Most senior pets have already been trained, and have a pretty good idea of what is expected of them. There’s a lot to be said for being able to skip that housetraining stage!

They’re Adorable

Puppies are undeniably adorable, but older dogs are also very charming. Fido often becomes super sweet and affectionate as he grows older. Plus, it’s charming to see a senior pooch plodding faithfully along beside you on walks, or just peacefully snoozing in his doggy bed.

They Need Love

It’s always sad to see older pets in shelters. In some cases, their owners are no longer able to care for them, due to illnesses or other issues. However, sometimes they are simply abandoned and replaced by younger models. This is heartbreaking, Fido will be emotionally devastated by being abandoned by or separated from a beloved owner, often after years of devotion. Giving him a wonderful retirement is a very sweet and kind thing to do. You may also find it very fulfilling. Sometimes the pets we save end up helping us in their own way!
