Fido’s Furry Feet
May 13, 2022
If our canine pals had a logo, it would undoubtedly be the pawprint. Fido’s cute footsteps are often used as a stamp or symbol on his product! As it turns out, your dog’s paws are crucial to his health and well-being. After all, he wouldn’t be able to jump up to greet you or run after that Frisbee without them! A Saginaw, MI vet discusses caring for your pup’s paws below.

Claws

Keeping Fido’s nails clipped is more important than many people realize. Long nails can interfere with your dog’s ability to get good traction. They’re also uncomfortable for him to walk on. Your canine buddy may shift his weight or adjust his stride to compensate. If this were to happen once, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but over time, it can become problematic, as it puts additional stress on Fido’s bones and joints. That can contribute to or exacerbate issues such as arthritis. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, schedule trims with his vet or groomer.

Paw Pads

Fido’s paw pads are very delicate. They act as shock absorbers, and also help your faithful pet gauge temperatures. In summer, your furry friend can get painful burns and blisters from walking and running on hot surfaces. Winter also presents some specific hazards. Snow, salt, and chemical de-icers are also very harsh on dogs’ feet. Using paw balm can help protect and moisturize your pup’s paws. You can also try putting booties on your pooch, assuming he doesn’t mind. It’s also a good idea to wipe his feet down regularly, to remove any traces of salt or chemicals he may have walked through.

Toe Fur

Some dogs have little tufts of fur growing between their toes. These are super cute, but you may want to consider clipping them. These can trap gunk, which can be uncomfortable. In winter, they can collect ice balls, which aren’t very fun or comfortable for Fido.

Tricks

Does Fido hate having his feet touched? Teach him some cute tricks, such as Shake Paw. This is not only cute, it can be helpful in getting dogs used to having their feet handled. If your pup thinks he gets a yummy snack for giving you his paw, he may suddenly become much more amenable to his ‘pawdicures’! Do you have questions about your dog’s care?
